James Warren Beatty, 78, of Freedom passed away a little after noon at his home on Wednesday, March 18, 2020. James was born in Owen County, Indiana on March 30, 1941 to Kermit and Nella (Dubois) Beatty.
James attended Splinter Ridge School and Patricksburg High School. He served in the National Guard. He worked many jobs in his life including a milk route, logging, driving a school bus, farming, and of course long-haul truck driving where he was also known as "Wagon Master". He was fond of telling people he painted the old bridge at Freedom. He liked to let them believe he was an artist. What he didn't say at first was that he painted the actual bridge and he did it while wearing his army boots which ended up a shiny silver.
In 1974 he married Nancy Hudson and became the father of Jennifer and Julia. He was a stepfather to Phillip and Lisa. They purchased their current home-place and even more important to him they purchased the family land that is now a Hoosier Homestead Farm from his uncle Orlan Beatty. They raised beef cattle and farmed the land adding to their holdings as they went.
He had a voice you would remember, and a sense of humor not everyone understood. But, underneath that gruff exterior he possessed true kindness.
James leaves behind his wife Nancy; his daughters, Jennifer Jones and Julia (Bryan) Strouse; stepdaughter, Lisa (Claude) Vest; grandchildren, Samantha (Jerry) Phillips, Aron Jones, Cole Jones, Jayna Hansen, and Noah Strouse; great granddaughter Kylie Phillips; and devoted dog Daisy.
He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings Bernice Beatty and Joseph Beatty, and stepson Phillip Barnes.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, March 23, 2020 at West & Parrish & Pedigo Funeral Home in Spencer with Don Kelley officiating. Burial will follow at Splinter Ridge Cemetery.
Visitation will be held on Sunday from 2-6 PM at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
