Paul McCarter Jr., age 85, of rural Bloomfield, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 8, 2019, at Garden Villa in Bloomington. He was born in Odon, Indiana on July 6, 1934, the son of Paul T. & Eva G. McCarter.
Paul attended the Odon Madison School and graduated in 1952. He enjoyed Living in the country and helped with farming until he left to go to college. He worked at Crane for about 2 years, a factory job at Washington for a year then decided that he should go to Purdue and graduated in 1959 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Agronomy. He worked for the Soil Conservation Service as a Soil Conservationist and as a Soil Scientist until retirement in 1994. After, he soon got tired of retirement, he established a consulting business (Soil Investigations) where he worked until retiring for good in 2003. Not being one to just sit around, he kept busy on the farm doing whatever he felt like until his death. He was an avid reader, particularly of history and loved to find errors in books and newspapers.
Paul was a Christian. He joined the Bunkum EUB Church in his teens. His favorite saying was, "You may think that you are saved but when you really become one with Christ you will know that you were not before but are now".
He is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Janet L. (Williams) McCarter; son, William D. McCarter; stepsons, Robert Waggoner, Joseph Waggoner and Timothy Waggoner; granddaughters, Amanda (McCarter) Fox and Jessica McCarter; step granddaughters, Alison Waggoner, Amber Waggoner, Amy Waggoner, Hanna Waggoner; step grandsons, Jason Waggoner, Chris Waggoner, Devin Waggoner and Zachery Waggoner as well as several great grandchildren.
Paul is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Genevieve Davis and his son's mother, Hazel McCullough.
Funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm at Welch & Cornett Funeral Home in Worthington on Sunday, August 11, 2019. Burial will follow at Williams Cemetery.
Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Sunday from 11:00 am until the time of service.
