John W. KayJuly 28, 1929 ~ October 7, 2017 (age 88)
John W. Kay, age 88, of Spencer, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 7, 2017, at IU Health Bloomington Hospital. He was born in Wheeling, West Virginia on July 28, 1929, the son of Loren & Ruby (Neumeyer) Kay.
John was a 1947 graduate of Wheeling High School in Wheeling, WV and from West Virginia University Agricultural School. He was a self-employed farmer.
John served in the West Virginia National Guard Tank Division and Indiana National Guard Battery B. He was an excellent marksman and won many medals for his precision and gunmanship.
He was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed spending summers at the family cabin on Ten Mile Lake in northern Minnesota and did his best to have the fastest boat on the lake. John also enjoyed traveling throughout the United States.
He was a member of the Spencer First Christian Church having served as an elder, chairman of the board and served on many church committees.
He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Phoebe (Corder) Kay of Spencer, three sons, David (Donna) Kay & Brad (June) Kay, both of Spencer, and Barry (Carolyn) Kay of Camby, three daughters, Anita Kay & Vivien (Vaughn) Eddy, both of Spencer, and Becky (Carson) Hayes of Bloomington, twelve grandchildren, Andy Kay, Travis Kay, Trista Elliott, Ryan Kay, Aaron Kay, Tyler Kay, Lauren Bland, Shaneal Eddy, Anna Smeltzer, Emily Bedel, Holly Gilbert, and Sarah Hayes, and thirteen great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at the Spencer First Christian Church at 11:00 am on Wednesday, October 11, 2017, with Dr. Allan Lewis officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Spencer.
Visitation will be held at the Spencer Christian Life Center on Tuesday from 4:00 pm - 8:00 pm, and Wednesday at the church from 10:00 am until the time of service.
